CANDLE LIGHT CEREMONY FOR H.M. THE QUEEN: Mr. Kwanchai Wongnitikorn, the Governor of Samut Prakan Province, and a thousand local people from Samut Prakan lit candles and sang blessings to H.M. The Queen on the occassion of her 77th birthday. The evening finished with a beautiful firework display.

ป้อมผีเสื้อสมุทร

PHI SUA SAMUT FORT: One of the few battlements in Samut Prakan that is still in good condition is the inner fort at Phi Sua Samut Island. This fort is located between the City Hall and Phra Samut Chedi. It is not officially open so you won't find it in any guidebook. But, it is possible to go there by catching a cross-river ferry from Phra Samut Chedi to Paknam Market. Just ask the captain to drop you off at the jetty for the fort.

จังหวัด สมุทรปราการนั้นถือเป็นเมืองหน้าด่านที่สำคัญในอดีต มีการสร้างป้อมปราการมากมายรอบๆ บริเวณแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา เพื่อไว้ป้องกันผู้รุกรานที่ผ่านทางแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาเข้าสู่ตัวเมืองหลวง  เราได้พยายามหาที่ตั้งของป้อมปราการที่เคยเป็นปราการด่านสำคัญในการปกป้อง แผ่นดินไทยในอดีต บางแห่งไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานให้เห็นในปัจจุบัน แต่บางแห่งยังคงมีอยู่ให้เห็น

ป้อมปู้เจ้าสมิงพรายคือหนึ่งในป้อม ปราการที่ยังคงอยู่ในปัจจุบัน ตั้งอยู่ในบริเวณสถาบันราชประชาสมาสัย (โรงพยาบาลพระประแดง) จากการได้สำรวจป้อมปราการ ยังคงมีเค้าโครงของป้อมให้เห็นอยู่ แต่สถานของตัวอาคารนั้นทรุดโทรม คล้ายซากปรักหักพัง มีต้นไม้ใบหญ้าปกคลุมไปทั่ว ราวกลับถูกทิ้งให้ร้างโดยไม่มีใครดูแล อาจจะเป็นเรื่องน่าเสียดายสำหรับคนรุ่นหลังที่จะได้เรียนรู้ประวัติศาตร์ เฉพาะแค่ในหนังสือ หรือแค่รูปภาพ ถ้าสถานที่จริงนั้นยังคงไม่ได้รับการดูแลใส่ใจจากผู้คนรุ่นปัจจุบัน

SALA DAENG FISHING VILLAGE: In an old guidebook to Bangkok, dating back about 150 years, the writer mentioned a "Red House" on the East bank of the Chao Phraya River exactly 2.3 miles south of Paknam. I have read quite a few contemporary accounts by travellers from the 19th Century that described their first arrival in the Kingdom of Siam. None of them mentioned a Red House.

จากหนังสือเก่าเล่มหนึ่งที่ได้เล่าถึงการมาถึงกรุงเทพมหานคร เมื่อประมาณ 150 ปีที่แล้ว ผู้เขียนชาวต่างชาติได้พูดถึงสิ่งแรกที่เป็นเครื่องบ่งบอกอารยธรรมที่เขาได้ เห็น เมื่อนั่งเรือผ่านบริเวณปากแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา คือ "Red House" (อาจเป็น บ้านสีแดง หรือ ศาลาสีแดง) ตั้งอยู่ทางฝั่งตะวันออกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา 2.3 ไมล์จากตัวเมืองปากน้ำ

ป่าจาก วัดบางนางเกรง

13th-19th July 2009: Samut Prakan is the most densely populated province in Thailand. In the city it is a bit like a concrete jungle which is so different to what it must have looked like a hundred or so years ago. I like using Google Earth to find new and potentially interesting areas in my area that are worth exploring. A while ago I spotted a large stretch of forest along the Chao Phraya River that wasn't far from Sukhumwit Road. When I zoomed in I could make out a path that cut across this green stretch of land. It went from Wat Bang Duan Nok to Wat Bang Nang Kreng. I worked out that the route would be only about 2 kilometers which is a nice afternoon stroll compared to some of my other walks.

สมุทรปราการเป็นจังหวัดที่มีประชากรหนาแน่นที่สุดในประเทศ ถึงแม้จะได้ชื่อเป็นเมืองอุตสาหกรรม แต่ก็ยังมีหลายพื้นที่ ที่ยังดูเป็นชนบทในแบบดั้งเดิม โปรแกรมกูเกิ้ลเอิร์ธ ทำให้เราเจอพื้นที่หนึ่งซึ่ง หลายคนอาจจะไม่ทราบว่ามีสถานที่แบบนี้ใกล้ตัวเมืองปากน้ำ จากรูปถ่ายทางอากาศจะเห็นได้ว่า มีทางเดินเชื่อม ระหว่างวัดบางนางเกรง และวัดบางด้วนนอก เป็นทางเดินที่มีป่าขนาบทั้งสองข้าง เราได้ไปเดินสำรวจทางดังกล่าว ป่าที่เห็นจากภาพทางอากาศนั้นก็คือ ป่าจาก โดยทางเดินดังกล่าวมีความยาวประมาณ 2 กม. ชาวบ้านแถวนั้นยังคงดำเนินชีวิตแบบดั้งเดิม โดยใช้ประโยชน์จากต้นจาก เช่น การทำหลังคาจากใบจาก ใบยาสูบ หรือ ขนมจาก
